By Flynt and Kahreen Part One Prelude (all characters and situations within, with the exception of Thaylog, Llew (Llewelyn) and Vash (Vashkoda) are the property of Dino Burattini and Karen Blackwell and may not be used without permission.) Prelude A pair of heads peeked over the rocky outcrop and surveyed the area below. Here and there was evidence of large scale, but organized digging associated with the unearthing of an archaeological site. The tan, horned gargoyle glanced his companion, a brown, slender, humanoid shaped, cat like creature. He watched as she turned her attention to a row of temporary sheds just off the left of the dig. "That's where the artefact would be," she said. "The place looks bigger than it does on the TV," Flynt commented, caping his dark purple wings over his shoulders. Kahreen turned her yellow feline eyes on the gargoyle. "Not feeling up to the challenge?" She remarked dryly. Flynt grunted. "Very funny." He turned his attention back to the site. " I almost wish Thaylog didn't see that news report a couple nights ago. I just want to get this over and done with and get home. The sooner the better." "Fine by me." Kahreen responded. She stood up and prepared to make her way down, when she felt her vision blur. She stumbled slightly and leant against the outcrop. "You alright?" Flynt asked. Kahreen stood still and accessed her microprocessors. 'Power fluctuation in occipital relays. Current status 87% operative.' "Damn." The biomech whispered as she issued command protocols. These system failures were becoming more and more frequent. The biomech's body was old and coupled with the extremely hard life she had led during the past 200 odd years, was starting to wear out. She had been keeping this fact hidden from the clan. There was nothing they could do anyway. The nano-technology simply didn't exist here to manufacture replacement parts. "Reroute secondary power to relays, priority Alpha." 'Reroute successful. Occipital relays at 99.7%.' Kahreen turned to Flynt. "Yeah I'm fine." She looked to the ground and kicked at a loose stone. "Damn rocks," she said angrily. Flynt was surprised by the tone of her voice. "Hey take it easy. It can happen to anyone." He made his way passed her and began to climb down. She watched as he nimbly hopped from rock to rock. "No," she said quietly, as she began to follow. "It doesn't." ****** *1* Two nights earlier.... "Why me?" Flynt stopped his pacing and looked at Thaylog. "Surely someone else is better suited? Vash or Llew! They can go with Kahreen." "Gee," Kahreen said sarcastically as she leaned against the wall. "It's nice to be wanted. I would be better off with one of the girls. Flynt would be like a bull in a china shop on a job like this." Flynt gave a low growl. "What is it between you two!!" Thaylog asked, some what irritated. The ivory hued gargoyle turned to Flynt." Why do you dislike Kahreen so much? She has proven time and again her loyalty to all of us." Flynt dropped onto the lounge. He couldn't argue with his leader on that account. In the two years they had known red headed biomech, she had done nothing to jeopardise their situation. Ironic in a way, because her first contact with the clan was in the role of a bounty hunter. Gargoyles in the modern world were somewhat of an urban legend, disbelieved by the majority of humanity. Within the minority that did believe in their existence, there were certain individuals who were keen to 'acquire' gargoyle specimens for 'trophies' or 'scientific' reasons. Kahreen had been contracted to complete such a 'scientific acquisition', until certain events caused her to rethink her stand. She allied herself to the gargoyles, and had been with them ever since. She was very secretive about her past, but one thing was for certain. The technology that had created her came from no earthly source. Flynt looked from Thaylog to Kahreen and back again. "It's not I don't like her," he admitted. "I just don't trust her. Not fully. I dunno." But Flynt did know. The only reason he was sitting here now was because of a freak magical accident that plucked him out of his time, some 4000 years ago, and stranded him in this strange new world. Though he had been here nearly 3 years now, he still had difficulty coming to terms with technology. In his eyes it was like a kind of magic, and magic was nothing but trouble. Kahreen was a child of technology and that unnerved him. Alive, yet not of flesh and bone. Artificial intelligence. He found the concept difficult to grasp and it made him very uneasy. "That's why I want you two to work together. Thaylog said, interrupting Flynt's thoughts. "To co operate. And this is the perfect opportunity." He looked at them both. "Learn to work as a team, trust each other." Kahreen glanced at Flynt. "Yeah right." Flynt frowned. "You sure about this. Skulking about a dig is very weird." He recalled the news reports earlier in the evening. A late Neolithic site had been unearthed nearby and had caused quite a stir with its discovery. It was rich with artifacts and one in particular, which had caught Thaylog's attention. Thaylog nodded. "Its doubtful the humans know what they have discovered among those ruins. But if that artifact is what I believe it to be, we must get our hands on it. Even if it’s only to prevent anyone else, especially potential foes to use it to their advantage." "In other words," Kahreen said. "You won't be the only one who would have recognized it." "In all likelihood, no, hence the urgency." "What exactly do you think it is?" Kahreen asked. Thaylog frowned. "If I am correct, it is a powerful talisman, one that would allow its user great power and influence. If it fell into the wrong hands it could alter the fate of nations. I cannot say with absolute certainty it is that talisman, but by the same token I'm not willing to take that chance." Flynt nodded in agreement. "Definitely not. Okay. I'm game. Besides what could happen. In, out and we'll be back before you know it. It'll be a picnic." Kahreen looked at the yellow haired gargoyle. "Cripes. You don't actually believe that!?" Flynt shrugged. "On past experience...no. But a little optimism couldn't hurt." *2* The Present.... In the shadows of the largest shed, Flynt sniffed the air experimentally and nodded. "All clear." Kahreen made her way around to the door and started to work on the lock. In a matter of moments there was a soft click. The biomech gave a little smile and pushed the door open. The pair entered the shed. Its interior was dimly lit. Kahreen rummaged in her trenchcoat pockets, producing a small flashlight. She switched it on and played its powerful focused beam around the room. The far side of the shed contained a few empty wooden crates. Nearer to them were tables, on which were placed a number of items. The made their way over, the flashlight's beam illuminated the newly discovered items. Flynt gave a low whistle, eying the ancient stone tools, arrowheads, and other implements he wasn't quite sure of. "Wow, there's some interesting stuff here." "Yeah," Kahreen had to agree. "But we don't have time to check them out for curiosity's sake," she moved from table to table until... "Here it is." Flynt observed Kahreen pick up the artifact that was the cause of their leader's worries. It was round, approximately the size of a dinner plate. Strange runes were carved along its surface and semi precious stones adorned its border. Kahreen eyed it critically. "This would be worth a bit to the right buyer." "Maybe," Flynt frowned as he looked at it. "If it’s some sort of talisman though, I'd rather see it locked away in Thay's vault. Magic brings nothing but trouble." Kahreen shrugged. "Oh well, the jobs done. Lets go." The duo headed towards the door. Flynt pulled it open and gave a yelp of surprise, which was mirrored from the other side. Kahreen saw a security guard in the doorway. The sight of an seven foot tall gargoyle and a feline biomech was something the guard was not expecting. He went white as sheet, fumbling for his revolver as he backed away. Flynt growled and jumped at him knocking the poor man unconscious with a blow to the head. "That takes care of that." Kahreen stared at him. "Must you always beat everyone into a bloody pulp!" "Hey! He's still alive isn't he! Or would you rather I let him go and tell the world we're here?" he reached out and grabbed Kahreen's arm. "What are you doing?" "If there's one human around there's bound to be more. It'll be quicker to glide back to your ship. So quit griping. Let's go." "Not bloody likely," the biomech responded as she wrenched herself from his grip. Unfortunately in the process, the artefact slipped from her hands and fell to the ground, breaking into several pieces. "Oh great," Flynt sighed. "Now look what you done." "Me?" Kahreen twirled and faced the tan gargoyle. "Why I ought to..." she stopped as she realised that Flynt's attention was fixed on the broken artefact. "I don't like the looks of this." Kahreen looked at the broken talisman. It was beginning to hum. Wisps of smoke and a strange glow began to emanate from it. The pair started to back away. "I think we should leave now," Flynt whispered. The pair didn't get two steps however before they were enveloped in a blinding flash of light. When it subsided there was nothing left of the talisman. It had disappeared.... along with Flynt and Kahreen.
*3* The aroma of cooking meat filled Kahreen's nostrils. Slowly she opened her eyes and took in her surroundings. Shadows flickered across a rock wall. She could feel her leather coat coving her like a blanket. Behind her she could hear the crackling of a fire. Raising her self on an elbow she looked over her shoulder. Flynt squatted in front of a small fire. He had set up a small spit and was cooking two small animals. He absently prodded at the flames with a stick as his eyes met Kahreen's. "Welcome back to the land of the living." "Yeah, thanks." She looked around. "Where the hell are we?" "I don't know," Flynt said. He was looking at her curiously, head slightly cocked to one side. "All I remember is a flash of light and waking up a short distance from here. I brought you to this cave and did some scouting around. I was lucky enough to catch some game. It's rabbit...I think." "You think? What does that mean?" As Kahreen sat up her head began to spin. She brought a hand to her head, sharply drawing it away a second later. Something wasn't right. She looked at her hand. Instead of a five fingered feline hand, her hand, her arm was devoid of fur. Her hand ended in four powerful claws, similar to Flynt's. She brought it to her head again feeling the brow ridges above her eyes. She tried to access her microprocessors, but there was no response. Confused she looked at Flynt.
"What's happened to me?" "You were like this when I awoke. As far as I can tell, you're a gargoyle. I don't know how. Magic I assume. The same magic that brought us here." He removed the food from the fire, snapping the spit in half. Stunned at the news, Kahreen felt herself. She could feel the beat of a heart within her body and the pangs of hunger in her belly. She moved her shoulders, feeling the weight of wings upon her back. She was flesh and blood. The thought stunned her. Silently she watched Flynt kneel beside her and offer her the food. "Here, you must be hungry." She was and took the food, sniffing at it experimentally as Flynt took a large bite from his. Kahreen took a bite. It was an unusual sensation for her, to physically eat food. It tasted good. She looked at Flynt. "I scouted the area," he told her. The tan gargoyle seemed strangely subdued. "We seem to be in the middle of a forest. Where? That's anyone's guess." He looked at the caves entrance. "One thing is for certain, it isn't home." He stood up, wiping his hands on his green loincloth as he walked to the mouth of the cave. Kahreen set her meal aside and followed. Flynt pointed upwards. A large silver moon hung in the night sky. Just below it was a smaller moon, slightly gold in color. "Damn," Kahreen stared at the night sky. "You got that right." "As far as I can figure, that way is "north". At least as we know it," Flynt pointed to the right, where the sky was lighter. "And that would be "east"." Kahreen nodded in agreement. "If it is, it looks like dawn isn't far off. We should stay here for the day. Tomorrow night we can start searching, find out where we are." "Agreed." The pair headed inside and sat down, each silent in their own thoughts. Flynt prodded the fire some more, watching as the flames danced and flickered. Kahreen sat across from him, her head on her knees, trying to come to terms with her dramatic change. The thought frightened her, yet at the same time fascinated her. She often wondered what it was like to be flesh and blood. A sudden thought occurred to her. "Flynt?" "Yeah?" the tan gargoyle looked up from the fire. "What's it like to turn to stone?" "Huh? It's umm..." His brow furrowed as he tried to find a way to explain. Gargoyles turned to stone at the onset of daybreak. It was how they rested and recovered from any injuries. "It just happens. I suppose it's like the what the humans call sleep." he looked at the cave's entrance. It was getting brighter outside. "You're going to find out in a few moments," he kicked some dirt over the fire and put it out before settling on one knee, ready for the oncoming dawn. Kahreen likewise made herself comfortable, her heart pounding in uncertainty. Outside birds could be heard singing, greeting the dawn. The sun broke the horizon and the pair watched as the sky got brighter and brighter. "What gives...?" Flynt looked at Kahreen, then back to the entrance. He ran to the cave mouth and looked out, eyes squinting in the brightness. "We should be stone...but we not." The excitement in his voice was evident as Kahreen joined him. "Is that...the sun?" He raised his hand. "Its warm." Kahreen looked at the wonder on Flynt's face and found it hard to suppress a smile. "It's a sun yeah, but not ours. This one is bigger and redder. Maybe that has something to do with it." Flynt looked around at the forest. Leaves of different shades, red, gold and green adorned the trees. "It all looks so different! Lets have a look around. We can probably find out a lot more in the daylight!" "Whoa. Take it easy Flynt! We don't even know where we are yet. We'd be running a risk being out in broad daylight." "We'll take it slow then. Not go far. And stick to the ground. Less likelihood of being seen." Kahreen relaxed visibly at his last comment. "Yeah that sounds good." Flynt noticed her look. "What's up?" "Nothing. I agree. Stick to the ground and we should be fine." Flynt started to laugh. Kahreen glared at him. "What's so funny!" "Heh, nothing." With an effort, Flynt regain his composure. Kahreen gave him a suspicious look and headed towards the forest. "Well. Lets get going then." Flynt followed, giving a small grin. "Welcome to Gargoyle Gliding Techniques 101," he whispered. " I'm your instructor, Professor Flynt." *4* The little wagon bumped and trundled along the forest track, its three occupants rocking along with the motion. Up front a portly woman flicked on the reins, urging the mule forwards. She wore a cream coloured blouse and long maroon skirt, her friendly face famed by auburn hair, speckled slightly with grey. Seated next to her was a man with long, dark, grey streaked hair and beard. He was dressed in plain blue flowing robes, their edges gilt with golden symbols. Behind them a figure sat silently, features hidden within the folds of a grey cloak and hood. On either side of the wagon walked two men, the smaller of the two, slender, dressed in brown leather armour and green leggings, a green cloak and hood covering his head. The other was a large, muscular man, dressed in slightly mismatched plate and chain mail armour. His long brown hair was tied back loosely in a ponytail. A large sword hung from a well worn scabbard at his side. He was mumbling to himself, and looked clearly unhappy. "I was doing well in Aylesbury, another hour or so and I would have cleaned those fools out at dice." "We were not there to waste time in gambling Huron," his companion on foot said. "Only to get supplies." The big man grunted. "We had time Lias. A few more gold pieces in my pouch wouldn't have hurt." He glanced over to the wagon. "I would have if your sister didn't get into a "religious debate" outside the temple, that is." The figure in the back of the wagon drew back her hood to reveal her finely chiselled features and pointed ears, identifying her as one of the Elven race. Her blonde hair was tied back in a plait. The most remarkable attribute though were her purple hued eyes, which glinted and flickered in the light like jewels. It was after her unusual eyes that she had been named... Amethyst. She fixed the large warrior in her gaze. "They are not to be trusted. These so called "Temples of Light" have a sinister agenda. One that must be stopped. I cannot say any more than that." "You clerics and priests are all the same," Huron replied. "Anyone who doesn't follow your path is instantly sinister or evil." "That is not true," Amethyst answered. Lias removed his hood. His features were similar to his sister, the same chiselled features, but with dark eyes and hair. "Your family, your friends did not disappear after these priests appeared," he said tightly. The blue robed man, watching the exchange in silence leant forward. "And what of your beliefs Huron? What of the ancient prophecy?" he leant back and began to quote. " 'A new cult shall rise and peace shall cover the land for a decade. Beware for the winds of war and darkness shall follow, marking the return of the Ancients, of the Angels.' " "Pah! Those are fairytales for children. Stories told to our grandparents when they were but babes! Even the wizards’ conclave disagreed with you Galen. You said so yourself. Isn't that why they threw you out?" "He left!" The woman sitting next to Galen said. "Galen has spent his life studying the ancient texts. The conclave was foolish in not listening to him." Galen shook his head. "Its alright Mirran. Huron is free to believe in what he wishes." "Think about it," Lias said. "The Temples of Light grow stronger and for the past 10 years there hasn't been so much as a border dispute between the realms. Even the ogres have been keeping to themselves." "All I know is that times like these make it hard for me to earn a real living. But it’s not the first time." Huron answered. "Gold, lusty women and a strong swordarm. That's what I believe in and that's all I need. No ancient prophecies or religious nonsense for me." Amethyst sighed and seated herself once again. Lias looked at his companions. "If we are to make it to the Dragon's Spine by nightfall, we'd best keep moving." "I don't think you will be going anywhere," said a voice from up ahead. Half a dozen armoured figures detached themselves from the surrounding forest. One of then stepped forward. "We've come for the cleric. The rest of you are of no consequence. If you co-operate and hand her over, we might just let you live." Lias' sword hissed from his scabbard. "You are taking no one, stand aside." The armoured figure laughed. "I was hoping you'd say that. Prepare to die!" *5* Flynt gave a groan and leant against a tree, sliding down until he was squatting with his back to it. He looked up through the open forest canopy at the blue sky, squinting slightly, his eyes still not quite used to the unaccustomed brightness. "I hope it doesn't get this hot everyday," he sighed. "I need a break." He glanced towards Kahreen, who was wearing her leather coat over the padded blue combat armour. The armour was looking a little tattered, a rip here and there, most notably where her knee spurs and tail now protruded. "Good grief, aren't you hot in that thing?" "A little," she replied, sitting next to him. Removing her coat, she examined her upper armour. The sleeves had been removed, rendered useless after her elbow spurs had torn through them. The back wasn't much better; two large rips in the material where her wings came through. She frowned. Locating the catch at the front, she undid her top, revealing her blue vest underneath. The shoulder straps were still in tact and fortunately the back was cut low, so her newly acquired wings had not damaged it. She tossed the now useless armour aside. "That was a good piece of equipment too." She looked at the leather coat. "Keep that," Flynt said. "It'll make a handy blanket or pillow if need be. I know..." He reached over and began to roll the coat up. He looked around for a moment. Scooping Kahreen's discarded top in his hand he tore off several strips of material, tying some around each end of the coat and then two more strips between them. He slung the little pack over her shoulder. "There!" He grinned. Kahreen gave a little smile. "Why thank you kind sir." Flynt looked at her. "You know... we would get a lot further if we took to the sky. With all this warm air we can stay aloft for ages" "I dunno," Kahreen replied hesitantly. "Maybe it would be better to stay on the ground." "It will take us forever, if we stay on the ground," he stood up and opened his wings. "These aren't just for decoration you know." "I know, but..." She stood up and opened her reddish hued wings for the first time and flexed them experimentally. So far she had kept them hidden beneath the coat. " I'm not sure I know how." "It's easy, trust me!" Flynt climbed the nearest tree, placing himself on one of the outer branches. "Lesson one!! Just open them wide and..." He leapt off and glided gracefully in a circle before hovering above Kahreen. "See!" He called out. "Try it!" Kahreen climbed the tree and tentatively made her way out onto the branch. She could feel the rising warm air. Her heart was pounding fast. She opened her wings wide, closed her eyes and jumped of the branch. Instead of plummeting to earth she felt herself rising. She opened her eyes, gaining a birds eye view of the forest below. "My god," she whispered. "I'm gliding! I’m actually gliding!" Flynt came alongside, a huge smile on his face. "There you go, what did I tell you." Kahreen hung in the air, allowing the current to carry her. She surveyed the world beneath her from a new perspective. It took her breath away. "Okay." Flynt said, obviously pleased. " Lesson two. How to actually go in the direction you want to. Just lean to the left or right, leading with that wing in the direction you want to go. He performed a couple manoeuvres. "It also helps to flick your tail in the opposite direction at the same time. It makes for a faster response. To go up..." He opened his wings and flapped a couple times gaining altitude. "And to drop..." He tucked his wings slightly and fell, before opening them again to halt his descent. He looked at his red haired companion. "Okay your turn, don't worry I wont be far away." Kahreen experimentally banked to the left and right, growing more confident. Flynt watched as she performed her manoeuvres some distance away. She moved gracefully, almost as if she had been gliding all her life. "Damn," he whispered. "She's a natural." He watched as she started to gain altitude, rising higher. "That's good. Careful! Don't straighten up too..." Panic caught in his throat as he saw Kahreen stall and start to drop. "Damn!" the tan gargoyle gave a powerful flap of his wings and raced toward the falling form. **** Kahreen brushed the hair from her face as she glided. The feeling was exhilarating. She banked left and right, flying in circles and figure 8's. This was truly flying! She laughed as she flapped her wings and rose higher. She straightened up, almost vertical with the ground. She opened her wings wider but she had over extended herself. She found herself falling onto her back, her wings unable to get full of air. She screamed in frustration as she started to tumble end over end, desperately trying to get the right way up. Suddenly she felt a hard thump and felt herself rising. Eyes still shut she grabbed a tight hold, and was rewarded with a gurgling sound. "Your...choking...me!!" Kahreen opened her eyes and found herself staring straight into Flynt's face. He wore a strange look, probably as a result of her arms being in a vice like grip around his neck. She relaxed her hold a little. Flynt took a lung full of air and glared at her. "What are you trying to do? Give us both heart attacks!! Kahreen looked into his dark eyes and saw the worry and fear in them. "Are you alright?" he asked. The worry in his eyes was still there. He was holding her close against him. Her arms were still around his neck. Kahreen was touched at his concern for her. "Yeah...yeah I'm fine." Relief washed over Flynt's face. "Lesson number three. Never, ever overextend yourself. It robs your wings of air." "I noticed." Flynt continued to glide. "Your safe now, that's all that matters," he looked to the left. "I think we should continue in this direction." As he began to bank, Kahreen tapped him on the shoulder. "Umm I think its safe to let go now." "Huh? Oh." Looking a little embarrassed, he slowly released Kahreen from his grip, She opened her wings as she dropped, and a moment later was gliding alongside. "Flynt. Thanks." "Hey, no problem." He pointed up ahead. "Look! What's that?" Kahreen stared. "Well know we now we aren't the only living beings here," she frowned. "It looks like a skirmish of some kind." "Well wont find out anything by hanging around up here," Flynt began to descend. "Someone down there might have some information we could use." "Agreed. But lets not go hell for leather into this Flynt! Let's check it out first." "Yep. Check it out first. What other way is there?" "Well there was the time when..." Flynt raised a hand. "Okay, okay! I get the picture, yeesh!"
*6* "Looks like a bunch of humans beating themselves up. Some things don't change do they?" Flynt sighed as he and Kahreen watched the scene from a nearby tree. "That one doesn't look like a human," Kahreen said pointing at Lias. "Look at his ears." "Yeah. He kinda reminds me of Elves I've seen in books," Flynt watched as the blue robed human shot what appeared to be lightning from his fingers. "They have a mage too." "They are out numbered. We should help," Kahreen poised herself, ready to take to the air. "I knew you were going to say that," Flynt grumbled. "Normally I'd say let them knock each other off, but then this isn't 'normal'. " Kahreen glared at him. "All humans aren't bad. How long are you going to hate and blame humans for everything?" Without waiting for an answer she took off. "Until I meet a decent one," Flynt growled as he followed Kahreen. "In other words, always." ***** Combatants on both sides froze as a pair of piercing war cries rained from above. There was a flash of movement and two of the armoured soldiers found themselves sliding along ground. Flynt landed his tail lashing out, catching another soldier in the chest and sending him to the ground with a thud. Kahreen landed atop another, driving him into the earth. Behind them the little group looked on in astonishment. "Who...what are they!" Lias exclaimed. "Demons," Huron replied. "Once they've finished with them, they will turn on us!" he started to advance. "No!" Amethyst shouted. "Leave them be. They are not demons, but allies." "And if you're wrong?" Huron asked doubtfully. "No," Galen nodded "Amethyst is right." He watched, fascinated. "I can hardly believe it," he whispered. Kahreen and Flynt, eyes glowing, turned on the final two soldiers. They backed away fearfully, before turning and fleeing into the forest. Flynt checked the downed soldiers. "They can consider themselves lucky they're still breathing." "Leave them alone Flynt," Kahreen said. "We have company." For several seconds the two groups looked at each other in silence. Amethyst stepped forward. "We thank you for your help noble warriors. I am Amethyst." She indicated to the others. "This is Lias, Huron, Mirran and Galen." Flynt watched curiously as the one called Galen, muttering excitedly to himself, rummaged around in the back of the wagon. "I am Kahreen, and this is Flynt," Kahreen responded. Flynt nodded in acknowledgement. "Here it is!" Galen shouted excitedly, waving a piece of parchment in the air. "What?" Lias asked. "Another part of the prophecy!" "Oh no not that again," Huron groaned. "Listen," Galen scanned the page and finding the spot he was looking for, began to read. “.... And this time shall also mark the appearance once again of the Guardians. A tall tan warrior and his flame haired mate, who, like their ancestors of long ago, will confront their ancient foe..." Flynt raised his brow ridges as he looked at Kahreen. "Huh? Ancient foe? And flamed hair mate?" Kahreen looked at Flynt. "Hey don't ask me, I didn't write the stuff." "I never said you did." "Good. Then stop looking like you stepped in something unpleasant." "I'm not! I'm trying to figure this all out!" Galen looked from one to the other with a confused expression, not quite understanding why the two were arguing. Kahreen turned to the mage. "I think you might have us mistaken with someone else." "Definitely," Flynt added. "This is all very interesting, but we are no.... guardians. We are just... travellers passing through." "There has been none on this world like you for ten millennia," Galen approached slowly still holding the parchment. Flynt stiffened involuntarily, his natural suspicion of humankind taking over. Galen showed the pair the document. Though the writing was in a hand neither Kahreen nor Flynt could understand, the image in the center of the page was unmistakable. Two gargoyles. Two gargoyles that looked remarkably like themselves! "This is too much," Flynt said turning away. "I suggest we continue to towards the Dragon's Spine," Lias spoke up. "I doubt we shall make it by nightfall, but it would be wise to put as much distance between us and our pursuers as possible." "What about our foes?" Huron, having become bored with Galen's talk of prophecy was searching the unconscious soldiers, relieving them of money pouches and other items. Lias looked on in disgust. "Leave them be." Huron held up a small chain on which an amulet was attached. "No doubt about it," he said looking at it. "These men are with the Temples of Light." He tucked the jewellery into his belt as he looked back at Amethyst. "You really got up their noses didn't you?" The cleric ignored his comment. Kahreen walked over to one of the unconscious soldiers, picking up the sword that lay next to him. The blade was dark, almost black in color and slightly wavy in design, with a golden hilt and a red stone set in the pommel. She tested it for a few moments, checking it for weight and balance. With a satisfied smile she removed the scabbard from the soldiers waist and sheathed the weapon. "A little extra help?" Flynt said with a smile as Kahreen approached. "Yeah, you never know." "Come," Lias said. "Lets get moving." Galen looked a Kahreen and Flynt. "So Guardians. Will you join us on our quest?" "A quest?" Flynt asked. " What sort of quest?" Galen smiled. "Our reasons all vary, but the outcome is the same. To stop the Temples of Light." "Maybe we can find some answers ourselves," Kahreen said to Flynt. The tan gargoyle thought for a moment and nodded. "Agreed." Kahreen turned to Lias. "What and where is this Dragon's Spine you spoke of?" "It's a mountain range far to the east. You can just make out the features on the horizon." Flynt nodded. "We'll take to the air. To keep a look out for potential danger." The two made their way to the trees as the little group prepared to continue along their way. Within moments they were airborne, following their new allies east. ***** *7* The red sun hung low in the horizon as Lias raised his hand, bringing the group to a halt. He indicated a nearby clearing. "This will be good place for camp for the night." He said as he and Huron quickly scouted the area. The sounds of a waterfall and a river could be heard nearby. Though still some distance away, the peaks of the Dragon's Spine could be made out clearly, rising jagged and majestically towards the sky. Flynt and Kahreen landed in the clearing and looked around. The members of the party were already unloading "There is no one around for miles," Kahreen said. "I doubt we will have any unpleasant surprises. Ambush wise anyway." Lias looked at the sky. "Two hours 'til nightfall." "Let's see if we can find any game," Huron suggested. Lias nodded in agreement as he removed a bow and a quiver of arrows from the wagon. Flynt turned to Kahreen. "Great plan. I'm starved. I could eat a horse!" "Me too," As if to confirm this, her stomach gave a small rumble. Kahreen frowned. She still wasn't fully used to these 'flesh and blood' sensations. Lias looked at the pair curiously. "I doubt there would be any horses nearby, Guardians." "It’s just a figure of speech," Flynt answered. "Umm Lias, this "Guardian" thing...you don't have to call us that. Just Flynt and Kahreen will do." Lias nodded and smiled. "Very well." As the camp was being set up, Galen and Amethyst arranged a small circle of rocks and sticks in the center of the clearing. The mage sprinkled a small amount of powder on the twigs and gave a small incantation. Almost instantly the sticks ignited, and a small fire began to burn comfortably. "There," Galen said. That should ward off the chill as the night goes on." The hunting group prepared to move out but were stopped by Mirran's voice. "And where do you think your going?" The group turned and saw Mirran pointing at Kahreen. "Yes you. Come over here lass." Confused Kahreen walked over the woman, who immediately began to fuss over her. "My, my. Look at you, you're a mess!" "But..." "No buts. You may be a Guardian and a warrior, but that's no excuse to be walking around looking like a beggar," Mirran began to look through the back of the wagon. Kahreen glanced to Flynt in a silent plea for help. Flynt grinned." I think I'll leave you on her capable hands." With that he headed off into the woods. "Oh thanks," Kahreen mumbled. She looked as Mirran pressed something into the palm of her hand. "These fragrant leaves will cleanse you. The river is close by, so hurry before the sun disappears altogether," Mirran handed her a large cloth about the size of a towel. "You can dry yourself off with this." Galen looked up and laughed. "Mirran, leave the poor girl be!" Mirran pretended to look hurt. "Why Galen, who else is going to take care of all of you on this journey! Now hush and tend that fire." Kahreen took the towel with mumbled thanks started to leave but Mirran wasn't finished yet. "Oh let me see this." She reached for the wrapped trench coat Kahreen carried. "Ahh this is fine leather. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can do with it." "Umm okay," Kahreen handed the leather coat over. She looked at the leaves in her hand. "Thanks." "My pleasure," Mirran smiled as she started to steer Kahreen in the direction of the river. "Now hurry, you don' wanna be catching a chill now do you?" ***** The flames from the torchlight flickered across the stone walls of the temple. A dark robed cleric, wearing the symbol of the Temples of Light about his neck looked at the soldiers in front of him. "You failed to get the Elven female? Our lord will be displeased." "We would have had her," one of the soldiers protested. "But these creatures came to her aid. Large winged beasts we have never seen before. They fought with the strength of ten men!" "Really?" The cleric said, not entirely convinced. "Describe these beasts to me." His brow furrowed as the soldiers outlined their encounter. He remained silent for several minutes after the soldiers had finished, deep in thought. "Very well." The cleric finally sighed. "Go now. Keep searching for our quarry." As the soldiers departed, the cleric entered a small alcove. At its center sat a large brazier in which a blue flame burned. The cleric uttered a spell and moments later a figure appeared within, pale, hazy and indistinct. "Why do you disturb me?" The figure in the flame demanded. "My lord," The cleric began. "I have news. The two we were warned about have appeared. There was a disturbance involving a small party of travellers. Among their number was a cleric of Kithan. I sent men to deal with it, but the winged creatures came to their aid, allowing the Elven cleric and her party to escape." "This is not the news I wished to hear," The figure answered. The blue flame grew brighter, reflecting his anger. "Continue as planned. I shall make the other temples aware of this latest development." "Yes my lord." The flame died down and the figure was gone. *8* Flynt knelt by the river, hand raised, as still as a post. Beside him four fish lay on the riverbank. He suddenly lunged forward, his arm breaking the water and pulling back sharply. In his clawed hand was yet another fish. "Hmm, this should do nicely," He laid the fish next to the others and conducted a quick search around him. Finally locating a stick and some vine he tied the fish together by their tails and attached them to the stick. He began to make his way back towards the camp, when his keen hearing picked up a strange sound. 'Singing?' Flynt thought to himself. Curiously he changed direction, following the source of the sound up river. He could hear the sounds of a waterfall, coupled with the singing clearly now. Separating the shrubbery along the riverbank, he peered through, and then quickly looked away. Under the waterfall Kahreen was bathing and humming to herself. Flynt looked back up, totally mesmerized watching as Kahreen washed herself, happy and content. This was a side of her he had never seen before. But then she also looked nothing like she did a day or so ago. In fact... He shook his head, snapping himself out of the trance.
"What are you doing?" He muttered. "Spying on her like this." Keeping his eyes averted he got up and headed back to camp, feeling a little guilty about his intrusion. He didn't realise that Kahreen had finished bathing, and caught a flash of tan and green and he disappeared back into the woods. Her eyes narrowed as she recognized his form. "Just you wait, 'til I get back. I'll really give you something to think about!" ***** There was a chill in the evening air as the sun hung low in the sky, signalling the end of another day. Lias tended the night's dinner. Roasting on the spit along with the fish Flynt caught earlier, were several small fowl caught by Huron and Lias. Flynt moved closer towards the fire, and looked around the camp. Huron sat off to the side sharpening his sword, his shrewd eyes watching all around him. There was something about the mercenary Flynt didn't trust. Mirran was seated in the wagon, needle and thread in hand working on what looked liked parts of Kahreen's leather coat. Galen and Amethyst were nearby, poring over scrolls. Flynt watched them for several moments. "They often spend the evenings deep in discussion," Lias said. Flynt looked up. "What about?" "The Angels, the future. Galen's prophecy. If it's indeed true, there are dark times ahead." Lias looked over to the pair and frowned. "I have not seen my sister smile since the night we returned to our home to find everyone gone." "Gone?" Flynt asked. Lias squatted next to him. "Ever since Amethyst was young she showed special abilities. So much, that she applied to the Clerics Tower in Nador and was accepted for training. My family, the whole town was proud. Though some of our brethren are well versed on magic it rare for an Elf to become a cleric. Most are mages, or warriors, or a ranger like myself," he paused and glanced towards his sister. "While Amethyst was away, the Temples of Light established themselves in our town and began to build a following. Many were not pleased at this, but there appeared to be no trouble so the elders decided to let the Temple stay." "I take it was a decision they would come to regret," Flynt said. Lias nodded. "Recently my town was preparing for the celebration of its founding. Amethyst had also completed her training as a cleric of Kithan. I went to collect her from Nador. When we returned a few days later our town was empty, not a living soul remained." "But where did they go? An entire town just can't disappear!" "That night," Lias continued, "Amethyst had a dream. Visions of things past and perhaps of things to come. The Temples of Light are responsible for what is happening and there was warning to beware the 'the dark blood'. I don't know what that means. The dream guided us to Galen and foretold of the prophecy and your arrival." "Our arrival was an accident Lias. Kahreen and I aren't meant to be here." "Perhaps," The Elven ranger stood up. "And perhaps not. All things happen for a reason." "Yeah," Flynt sighed. " And when magic and the supernatural are involved who knows what the reasons are." He looked up, seeing Kahreen enter the camp. She was wearing her blue vest, the towel Mirran had given her tied around her waist. She headed straight towards him and angry look on her face. "Get a good look back there?" She asked icily. Flynt got to his feet. "What?" "Don't 'what' me!" She poked him in the chest with a talon. "I saw you in the bushes back there, what's the big idea?" "Oh right! Like I'd go and do it on purpose! I heard singing. I went to check it out!" Flynt shouted. "How was I to know it was you?" Kahreen poked him again. "Yeah? Well I bet you 'checked it' out thoroughly, didn't you!" "Stop poking me!" Flynt returned the gesture and Kahreen growled and raised a fist. "Someone should teach you some manners!" "Don't start something you aren't prepared finish," Flynt growled warningly. "Enough you two!" Mirran placed herself between the pair and glared in each at turn. "That will be quite enough! I'll not have any fighting, especially at dinnertime! Now you..." she pointed at Flynt. " Go sit over there and cool off and you..." she took Kahreen by the arm. "Come with me, I think you'll like what I have done with your leather." Mirran lead Kahreen away, while Flynt stood, open mouthed, unable to escape the feeling that he had just been chastised like a child. He tried to think of something to say, but found himself lost for words. He heard Huron laughing and gave the mercenary a dirty look before stalking off to sit under a nearby tree. Lias looked at Galen. "Mirran is a force to be reckoned with." Galen smiled. "Indeed she is. She has put many a brave soul in their place over the years. The Guardians are a fiery pair to say the least." "I hope there's nothing in the prophecy about them killing each other off," Lias responded half jokingly. Galen watched as Mirran showed Kahreen her handiwork. "They are not what I expected, but then again I wasn't sure exactly what to expect." "They are no different to you or I Galen," Amethyst said. "They hold the same hopes and fears as any living creatures." "Well said Amethyst," Galen responded. "And very true." He looked at the Elven siblings. "I don't know about you, but certainly would like some of the fowl before Huron eats it all." He pointed to the fire, where the big mercenary was already removing the food off the spit. "We all know what his appetite is like!" ****** *9* The atmosphere around the camp was relaxed as the little group settled down after dinner. Amethyst and Galen were once again deep in discussion; Lias sat near the fire, fletching his arrows. Flynt had settled comfortably against a rock and watched as Mirran fussed over Kahreen near the wagon, making final adjustments to her new clothes. Huron stood near a tree at the camps perimeter, having chosen to take the first watch of the night; though on more than one occasion Flynt noticed the mercenary's eyes stray in Kahreen's direction. He observed the warrior through narrowed eyes for a few moments. Unknown to the rest of the group, Flynt had not been the only one to see Kahreen bathing. Huron had been nearby and had seen her at the waterfall also. Feeling eyes upon him, Huron glanced in Flynt's direction, staring at him for several seconds before turning away. Somewhat of a womaniser, among his other "virtues", the big mercenary had began to entertain the idea of "impressing" Kahreen. That she was not one of his race did not faze him at all, Huron could recall many a night of enjoyment with pretty females of non humanoid origin. In fact, at the start of the quest he had tried to persuade Amethyst to share the pleasure of his company. But the Elf maiden was so cold and aloof, making it obvious in no uncertain terms she was not in the least bit interested. 'Kahreen might be a different story,' the mercenary thought. The way she and Flynt got along, it should be easy to worm his way into her affections. Besides how many could lay claim to bedding a legendary Guardian, if that was really who they were? He smiled briefly at the thought, the smile disappearing as he saw Flynt make his way over to the wagon, blocking his line of sight. Huron turned his attention back to the forest. There would be plenty of times and opportunities. He was in no hurry. ***** Kahreen looked up at Flynt's approach. Her mood had improved considerably since dinner. She twirled in a little circle. "Well... what do you think?" Mirran had done wonders with the old leather coat. Kahreen still wore her blue vest, but now it was tucked into a leather bodice tied around her lower torso. Mirran had also fashioned a leather skirt, mid thigh length, to which Kahreen had attached her sword belt. The skirt split up the sides, allowing for easy movement. With the left over leather Mirran had created a pair of elbow high arm guards, and a headband to keep Kahreen's hair from her face. Flynt looked at her new outfit and nodded approvingly. "I like it. It suits you." Mirran chuckled. "And it's certainly more respectable and lady like than the tatters you were wearing before." Kahreen smiled. "Thank you Mirran, it's wonderful." Flynt coughed lightly. "I want to have a word with Galen, find out more about our situation. You interested?" "Yeah sure." As the pair made their way across the camp Flynt looked at Kahreen. "Look, about before... sorry. I wasn't to know." "I won't mention again if you don't," Kahreen replied. "Deal?" Flynt nodded. "Deal. Hey you know Huron's been watching you an awful lot?" "Oh? A little jealous are you?" Kahreen teased, raising a brow ridge. "Umm no!" Flynt looked a little embarrassed. "I just thought you should know. I dunno, there's something about him..." "I'm a big girl," Kahreen responded with a little smile. "I can look after myself. Thanks anyway." Lias had joined his sister and the mage, the three looking over a map. Galen looked up at the pairs approach. "My friends! We are just trying to decide the best route for tomorrows journey." Lias nodded. "The Dragon's Spine can be treacherous, but we seem to have the best and shortest way through." "Great," Kahreen said. "How long should it take?" "Not more than three days. Then five days travel across the Red Desert before we reach Tozer's Cove." Lias frowned slightly. "Is there a problem?" Kahreen asked. "No, there shouldn't be. The Red Desert is known for sudden and violent sandstorms, if we were to be caught unawares..." "That shouldn't be a problem," Flynt said. " With our gliding ability Kah and I would see one coming from miles away." Lias nodded. "Good, we can definitely use that to our advantage." "And from Tozer's Cove we head north," Amethyst said. "North?" Kahreen asked. "Our answers lie to the north," Amethyst replied. "That's all I know." Flynt turned to Galen. "There is something I would ask of you mage, about an artifact Kahreen and I came across." He went on to describe the strange disk that was the cause of his and Kahreen's predicament, though he omitted any reference to the reasons why they had come across it in the first place. "Hmm, it does sound familiar." Galen said when Flynt had finished. Retrieving his magic tome, he leafed through the pages. "Ah ha, I thought so. Lomar's Teleportation Disk!" He began to read through the page. "Umm okay," Flynt said. "What exactly is that?" "About 300 years ago a wizard named Lomar, tried to find a way to extend the powers of teleportation, moving from one place to another in a blink of an eye. You see, powerful mages, and clerics to some extent, can teleport, but only over short distances. It takes great concentration and is very tiring if used often. Lomar devised a talisman to counter this, to harness the magic and make it easier to teleport over greater distances. At first, this worked very well and just about every mage created their own disk." He paused as he looked at his audience. "Then complications arose. It was discovered the disks became unstable after only a few uses. People would teleport and never reappear, others would reappear, quite insane and rambling on about strange worlds and terrifying creatures. There were other side affects also. Some would reappear and …well, not quite be human. Usually they would appear to be similar to the living creature they were closest to at the time. You can appreciate the consequences this would cause if the mage was say, near a rodent at the time of teleportation." "That probably explains what happened to me," Kahreen whispered to Flynt. "You and I were touching when we umm...got hit." Flynt nodded in agreement. "The disk?" Galen asked. "Do you still have it?" "No," Flynt replied. "It broke into pieces." "Good," Galen replied. "Whenever one is found a spell is cast to nullify it and make it useless." "Yeah, but now we have no means of returning to our worl... to our home," Kahreen said. "I'm sure a way can be found," Lias said. There was a long moments silence as Kahreen and Flynt pondered the information. "Galen?" Kahreen asked. "About the Guardians and Angels? I want to know more about this ancient prophecy and where we fit into it." "Yes." Flynt agreed. "That would help a great deal." "Hey!" Huron called from across the camp. "Who's turn to stand watch?" "That would be me." Lias rose to his feet. "I'll take the watch after yours then," Flynt said. Galen smiled at Kahreen. "I think that the prophecy is best left for another night. Tomorrow's trek will be strenuous. It's best we all get as much rest as possible." As the camp prepared to settle down for the night Kahreen sat and turned to Flynt. "What do you think? If we get home, perhaps I won’t change back, I'll stay like this?" She found it hard to keep the hope from her voice. She felt vibrant and alive. The thought of returning to her old body, a dying body, was not pleasant at all. "I dunno." Flynt lay down, arms behind his head and stared at the stars. "Maybe. We have to find away back first," he turned to Kahreen. "Why do I get the feeling that's not going to be as easy as it sounds?" ***** to be continued....
